Massage therapy is the manual manipulation of soft body tissues (muscle, connective tissue, tendons and ligaments) to enhance a person’s health and well-being. There are many types of massage therapy methods (also called modalities). People seek massage therapy for a variety of reasons; for example, to reduce stress and anxiety, to relax muscles, to rehabilitate injuries, to reduce pain and to promote overall health and wellness.
Acupuncture is the art of needle insertion at very specific points which are believed to affect certain conditions and balance the body naturally. Acupuncture enjoys an extensive history having originated in China several centuries ago as a whole healthcare system where it was utilized in some fashion for a multitude of conditions. According to an article titled “A true history of acupuncture” published by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain in 2004, acupuncture and Chinese medicine was first mentioned in Western literature in the early 13th century by William of Rubruck. The same article mentions that acupuncture in the US was popular at the beginning of the early 19th century, but then fell out of favor and faded from use. The modern resurgence of acupuncture dates to the 1970’s and continues into modern times.
Today people are enjoying the benefits of acupuncture from well crafted, sterile stainless steel disposable needles. Although the belief that acupuncture balanced an energy in the body called qi by using points on energy lines called meridians that course through the body, has in the scientific community, morphed into a neurological model based on MRI evidence showing brain activity in pain and other centers is altered by acupuncture, the effect is not tied to the belief of why it works. Noting the success of acupuncture treatment, acupuncture research is on the rise.

Ultrasound therapy is a physical mobility treatment used to help reduce muscle pain and increase range of motion. By using sound waves, we are able to stimulate deep inside the tissue. This minimizes stiffness, swelling, and pain while also promoting circulation, and pain-free movement.
The Activator is the most widely used chiropractic instrument. Studies show improvement with the Activator Method. It also has been compared to other techniques and proven to be just as effective. This means that for many patients an Activator adjustment could very well lead to the same outcome as a manual adjustment. This offers chiropractors and patients an alternative to manual adjusting when it is preferred for clinical reasons.
Functional Taping is a precise rehabilitative taping technique that is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints. This technique allows the body’s normal range of motion as well as providing extending soft tissue manipulation to prolong the benefits of manual therapy administered within the clinical setting.
Chiropractic is a non-drug, non-surgical approach to healing that emphasizes the natural ability of the body to heal. Traditionally, chiropractic physicians would use very controlled quick thrusts applied to restore joint motion for joints not moving as well as they should. As chiropractic was originally applied to the spine, it was believed that the nervous system would benefit from the restoration of movement and enhance the self-regulatory function of the nervous systems since the nerves exit the spinal canal where the spinal cord lives through openings formed by the bones of the spinal column.
Chiropractic adjustments have evolved over time since the profession began in the late 1800’s. The refinement of the techniques has helped make chiropractic adjustments an extremely safe and effective means of treating patient conditions when properly applied. Additionally, with advancements in technology instrument assisted adjusting techniques have become more common including Activator and drop-table techniques.
Activator technique is a protocol for analyzing the body and adjustments are applied with a hand-help device that delivers a predictable amount of force based on the device settings. As the adjustments are delivered while the patient is laying in a neutral position, many people find this style of adjusting more comfortable.
In the end, the choice of adjusting technique is the result of discussion between you and the doctor.

Electrical Muscle Stimulation
Here at Joie de Vivre Health & Chiropractic, we are proud to offer e-stim to our patients.
Stimulation can be a fantastic tool to assist you in feeling better. When applied to tissue, electric currents create thermal, physiological, and chemical responses. The currents also alter pain impulses.
We use interferential stimulation the most. Two channels of electrical stimulation create a third current that penetrates the affected tissues with little resistance. This stimulation will help control the pain and muscle contractions.
There are many benefits of electrical stimulation. Many of our patients say that it helps reduce edema as well as the swelling caused by fluid in the body’s tissues.
Our entire staff is dedicated to assisting you in your healing process. We focus on the root of the problem instead of covering it up with medication.
